Customer Reviews
Did my homework on generators. Ended up with this choice with an extra 100 hours carb compliant than Honda with the same output and just about half the money and even has a stand alone fuel shut off to run the carb dry for storage. Bought it for camping trips. Took it to the desert for a four day trip. Put in some good oil and filled with gas and on the 2nd pull she fired right up. Ran one tank of gas which was 10 hours on this puppy. Brought some extra oil to change out the break in oil. And ran straight for the next 3 1/2 days without shutting down. Refueled on the go. I had a refrigerator, a stand-up heater at night, rAdio and laptop for movies going all at once with no problem. Fridge and stereo ran at idle but with heater running, it ran about half to 3/4 throttle. Ran 5-6 hours with heater and 9-10 hours without. Recommend this to everyone nobody needs to go and spend a ridiculous amount of money for a yamaha or honda when this gen. Will do the same thing. Super quiet Operation
Purchased this Champion 2000 inverter generator for $599 from Home Depot and have used it for about 4 days now to power our computers and drives while traveling with our trailer.
The pros:
- cheap: $400 cheaper than the leading Honda 2000i and Yamaha 2000 inverter generators with pretty much the same specs
- stackable: you can get another to double the power output to 3000 w
- quiet: has a "economy" button that when engaged, reduces the engines revs and thus noise. It adjusts the revs and gets noisier when more appliances are being used.
The cons:
- cheap: the built quality is good, but not great. It's really not bad at all, but it could be better.
- functionality: the functional design is not very well thought out. For example, you have to do many oil changes on this generator (after first 10 hours, then each 100 hours of operation...and we're currently running it about 6-8 hours a day and sometimes more, which means an oil change is requried every 2 weeks or so) and to do this requires removing the entire back plate which is held by 4 screws. They could have made the oil spout immediately accessible from the outside, thereby avoiding this hassle.
- instructions: when you buy the unit, nowhere on the box does it indicate what kind of oil you need, or that you even need oil. So if you buy this unit and take it camping thinking it's going to work out of box, think again.
- waterproof: it's not, apparently. I called and asked. They said to put it under the trailer, but it's a touch too tall. Solution: waterproof it!
- security: you can secure it by chaining it to your RV/trailer or whatever. But, the handle, given that it's secured to the unit by exposed bolts, a simple socket wrench and the right sized end would make stealing these things much easier than cutting through chains. Solution: make removing the handle a little harder or design a built in bracket that's welded to the structure. :)
